Today was the first day of winter. I know that because not only did we put our clocks back an hour last night, not only was the first freeze of the year announced for the dawning hours and not only was it 5ºC when I got up, but because just before opening my eyes I heard the cranes squawking madly as they flew over in their southward migration.
